Jacob K. Javits Fellowship


What: A fellowship for up to four years of graduate study leading to the Ph.D. or the Master of Fine Arts in selected fields in the Arts, Humanities and social sciences. The specific fields are listed in the application.

Who is eligible: Seniors who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the U.S. or those becoming U.S. citizens or permanent residents, or permanent residents of the Northern Mariana Islands. Applicants must be eligible to be accepted to or currently attending a graduate program leading to a doctorate or Master of Fine Arts in an approved field of study, at an accredited institution of higher education. Typical applicants are seniors who will be ready to begin graduate study when they take up the fellowship. 20% of the fellowships shall be awarded in the social sciences, 20% in the arts, and 60% in the humanities.

Selection Procedure: National panels of scholars evaluate applications. Applications include a proposed plan of study and personal statement, three letters of reference from faculty, transcripts, and GRE scorers on the General Test for applicants in the humanities and social sciences. Applicants in the arts are required to submit tapes, slides, photographs or other supporting materials.

Who wins: Selectors look for candidates who have excellent GRE scores, very good GPA’s, additional evidence of academic achievement (such as published papers or other distinguished scholarships), and glowing letters of reference. Several UCI students have received this award.

In 2008, Catherine Nguyen '05 won the Javits.

Finances: Subject to the availability of funds, a fellow receives the Javits fellowship annually for up to the lesser of 48 months or the completion of their degree. The fellowship consists of an institutional payment (accepted by the institution of higher education in lieu of tuition and fees for the fellow) and a stipend (based on the fellow's financial need as determined by the measurements of need set forth in Part F of Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended). For Fiscal Year 2009, there were 72 new fellowship recipients.

Comments: This is an excellent fellowship for students entering graduate school in the Humanities, some Social Science fields, and the Arts.
