Carpe Diem Foundation Scholarship
What:
The Carpe Diem Foundation’s mission is to identify, honor and assist the best, brightest and most altruistic college students in the United States. The Foundation offers recognition and scholarship support to deserving students. The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors and college students currently in their freshman, sophmore or junior year who have a demonstrated commitment to community service and potential to improve the quality of human life.
Who is eligible:
New or continuing undergraduates attending an accredited institution by Fall of the year during which an application is submitted. Though not required, priority is given to students whose parents are or have been employed in public service positions such as education; local, state, or federal government; social service; public health (including medical providers); the administration of justice; and the fine arts.
Selection Procedure:
Submit application with the $10 application fee to the Carpe Diem Foundation by the deadline, as well as the required evaluations by one professor and by someone else who has worked with the applicant in community service. SAT or ACT scores are also required. Though not based on financial need, other scholarships won will factor into the award amount.
Mail your application early! Since FedEx will not deliver to P.O. boxes, you will need to use the post office's regular or Express Mail services. Allow extra time for the application packet to reach Illinois by the May 11 deadline.
Deadline: External 5/11/2010 (Projected)
Deadline: 4/13/2010 (optional SOP review)
Who wins:
In 2009, 19 winners were selected based upon leadership, community service, character, academics and potential to improve the quality of human life. Students who win have demonstrated that they have already taken actions which have improved people's lives through service organizations in their school and the community. Priority is given to students whose parents work in the fields mentioned above. Finalists will be contacted and interviewed in July. Winners are announced in early August.
In 2006, UCI's Jennifer Yanni was named the Humanitarian Honoree.
Finances:
Awards are $1,500 per year and may be used for tuition, room, board and books at U.S. accredited educational institutions. The scholarship may be renewed for up to four years based on continued participation in the community and dedication to scholarship. There is a $10 fee to apply.
