National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program
What:
The Department of Defense (DoD) awards graduate fellowships as a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens trained in disciplines of science and engineering of military importance. The DoD will offer these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships will be awarded for study and research leading to doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological, ocean and engineering sciences.
Who is eligible:
NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science or engineering. The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible to apply.
Selection Procedure:
A complete fellowship application consists of Master Personal Information form (Parts 1 and 2) Official transcripts Three Reference Evaluation Forms and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (general test only).
Each application will be evaluated by a disciplinary panel in the science or engineering discipline of the applicant's proposed advanced degree program. Selection of awardees will be made by the Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. Each agency will directly monitor the awards made in discipline areas closely related to its mission.
NDSEG Fellowship applicants are evaluated based on academic records, recommendations and GRE scores. Each application is evaluated by a disciplinary panel in the science or engineering discipline of the applicant's proposed advanced degree program.
Deadline: External 1/4/2010
Who wins:
On average, 10% of reviewed applicants are selected to receive awards each year. The prevailing goal is to provide the United States with talented, doctorally trained American men and women who will lead the state of the art in disciplines having the greatest payoff to national security requirements. Eligible students should recognize that this program is highly competitive. UCI students have won this award in recent years.
In 2007, UCI's Vicky Zhou was selected as a NDSEG fellow.
Winner notification will take place March 29, 2010.
Finances:
The DoD will pay three years of full tuition and required fees (not to include room and board). In addition, NDSEG fellows receive annual stipends of at least $30,500.
