James Madison Memorial Fellowship

What: A fellowship for future teachers supporting one or two years of graduate study leading to a master's degree in American history or political science, a Master of Arts in Teaching in those areas, or a related master's degree in education that permits a concentration in American history, government, or social studies. The fellowship was established by Congress to commemorate the bicentennial of the Constitution and to honor James Madison.

Who is eligible: For the Junior Fellowship, seniors or recent graduates who intend careers as secondary school teachers of American history, government or social studies in grades 7-12. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, agree to teach full time in a secondary school for no less than one year for each full year of study under the fellowship, and qualify for study toward one of the master's degrees indicated above.

Selection Procedure: Applicants may apply directly or may be nominated by UCI. Applications include a 600-word essay on the importance of the study of the Constitution, a proposed course of graduate study, and three letters of recommendation. At least one James Madison Fellow (either a Junior or Senior Fellow) will be awarded from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and, considered as a single entity, the other U.S. territories. Two Fellows may be selected from states as large as California.

Deadline: External 3/1/2010

Deadline: 1/29/2010 (optional SOP review)

Who wins: According to the guidelines, winners "convincingly testify to their commitment to teaching and their reasons for becoming teachers. They show involvement in civic activities. They write strong essays: concrete, without long, patriotic or philosophical generalizations, but with a sense of the realities of society, schooling and civil life as applicants understand them." Six students received Junior Fellowships in 2009.

Finances: Junior Fellows receive a stipend of up to $12,000 a year for one or two years of graduate study. Fellowships do not provide support toward doctoral degrees or teaching certificates.

Comments: Madison Fellows also attend a four-week, graduate level institute on the founding of American constitutional government at a university in the Washington, D.C. area.
