National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship
What:
The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science health-related research. The program is designed to improve access to education leading to research careers for those who have had fewer career opportunities than others. The program is designed to provide an incentive for exceptional scholars to pursue research careers at the NIH.
Who is eligible:
To apply, you must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or national of the U.S., be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited institution, have a GPA of at least 3.5 or be ranked within the top 5% of your class, and be from a disadvantaged background. To be considered as someone from a disadvantaged background means that 1) either your undergraduate institution classifies you as having "exceptional financial need" using the Federal Government's standards, or 2) you come from an environment that inhibited (but did not prevent) your obtaining the knowledge, skills, and ability required to enroll in an undergraduate institution. (If you do not qualify on the basis of "exceptional financial need," you may still qualify as being from a "disadvantaged background" by providing a personal statement explaining your situation.)
Selection Procedure:
Applications request that you discuss your commitment to biomedical science and your personal abilities. Along with this information, three letters of recommendation, provided by references who have direct knowledge of your research and academic qualities, play an important role in the evaluation of your application. Applicants must also submit an undergraduate institution certification form. At the discretion of the NIH UGSP, interviews may be conducted with scholarship finalists in person or by telephone. If necessary, these interviews take place in early August.
Deadline: External 2/28/2010
