Capital Fellows Programs
What:
An eleven-month post-graduate legislative (Unruh Assembly Fellowship; California Senate Fellow), executive (California Executive Fellowship), or judicial (Judicial Administration Fellowship) internship and seminar program in Sacramento. In this nationally recognized program, collge graduates have the opportunity to engage in public service and prepare for future careers. Participants are able to make policies and develop and gain first-hand experience in the governance and leadership of the most diverse, complex state in the nation. Fellows also participate in a graduate seminar conducted by CSU Sacramento.
Who is eligible:
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree by the time the fellowship year begins. Must be 20 years of age by Sept. 1 of application year. There is no preferred major. Applicants should intend state government or public services careers.
Selection Procedure:
The application form requests academic, work and activities data; transcripts from colleges attended; a personal and policy statement; and three references. Completed applications are screened by the Fellowship Executive Board. Personal interviews are conducted with the semi-finalists, followed by panel interviews in Sacramento for 35 finalists. A maximum of 18 Fellows are selected.
Deadline: External 2/24/2010
Who wins:
Most Fellows (but not all) are recent college graduates, with diverse majors that include science and humanities as well as social science. Selectors look for academic achievement, communication and analytical skills, community service, and leadership potential. Winners conduct themselves well in interviews. The Program says it "is looking for multi-talented individuals to lead our multi-ethnic, multi-regional, and multi-industrial state into the 21st century."
Approximately 64 students receive a scholarship annually: 18 Assembly Fellows, 18 Senate Fellows, 18 Executive Fellows and 10 Judicial Administration Fellows.
In 2007, UCI's Vasudhsiri Torch Sathienmars and Scott Seekatz were selected as Jesse M. Unruh Assembly fellows, and Aida Macedo de Partida was selected as a Judicial Administration fellow.
Finances:
In addition to paid enrollment in the graduate seminar and student fees, Fellows receive a monthly stipend ($1,972 plus periodic cost-of-living adjustment), medical, dental, and vision coverage, academic units depending on program, and student and staff campus privileges.
Comments:
The California State Assembly Fellowship is the oldest and one of the most prestigious legislative fellowship programs in the nation. Fellows have become elected officials, supreme court justices, community service directors, university professors and chief executive officers.
