Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation Scholarship

What: Authorized by the United States Congress in 1992 to honor Congressman Morris K. Udall and his legacy of public service. The scholarship program was created to encourage outstanding Native American and Alaska Native students to pursue careers related to health care and tribal public policy and to foster excellence in those fields.

Who is eligible: U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or United States nationals who are sophomores, juniors, or non-graduating seniors. Candidates must be in the upper fourth of their class and maintain at least a B average.
Additionally, applicants must fit one of the following categories:
  • Demonstrate commitment to a career related to the environment; or
  • Be a Native American or Alaska Native demonstrating commitment to a career related to tribal public policy; or
  • Be a Native American and Alaska Native demonstrating commitment to a career related to Native health care.

Please note: only Native Americans and Alaska Natives are eligible to apply in tribal public policy or Native American health care. Native American students studying tribal public policy or native health do not need to demonstrate commitment to the environment. Likewise, students pursuing environmentally related careers do not need to be Native American, nor do they need to demonstrate commitment to tribal public policy or Native health.

Selection Procedure: Candidates must be nominated by their college or university; each college or university may nominate up to 6 students.

Application components include the university nomination form, nominee information form, an 800-word essay discussing the significance of Congressman Udall’s major achievements and what those achievements mean to the nominee, official college transcript(s), and 3 letters of recommendation.
