Coro Foundation Fellowship
What:
A nine-month intensive experience-based postgraduate training program in public affairs. Participants work with high-level decision-makers, carry out a series of individually tailored field assignments with government, business, labor, media, political and community organizations, and participate in weekly seminars. Founded in 1942, the Program is funded through private, corporate, and individual donations.
Who is eligible:
A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required. Post-graduate academic and work experience are desired, but seniors can win. The Program is dedicated to diversity among its participants.
Selection Procedure:
Coro representatives visit the UCI campus in the fall to discuss the Program with students. Applications, which include essays and letters of recommendation, are due in early January. There is a $75 application fee. Twenty-four finalists are named in each of Coro's four regional centers (Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, St. Louis) for 12 slots in each center. Interviews are held in the regional training centers in early spring, and scholars are notified in April.
Deadline: External 1/22/2010
Who wins:
Fellows are selected on the basis of demonstrated potential for leadership and commitment to community and civic involvement. Winners are articulate and know how to express themselves well under pressure, as demonstrated in the selection process. Minority students are encouraged to apply. In 2009, UCI's Jason Molina '08 was selected as a Coro fellow.
Finances:
Tuition is $3,500, and need-based scholarships, tuition loans and deferred payment plans are available. Grants of up to $10,000 are available, based upon need, to cover living expenses. The Program's time commitment precludes outside employment. Decisions on financial assistance and tuition scholarships are based on the review of financial aid forms requesting assistance, and are made after admission to the program.
Comments:
This prestigious program serves as a launching-pad for future government and community leaders. Alumni include members of Congress, state legislators, mayors, community leaders, senior corporate executives and labor leaders. Alumni have served in every presidential administration since that of Eisenhower.
Graduates are eligible to receive credit from the Claremont Graduate School towards a Master's Degree in Public Policy and from USC's School of Public Administration. Other graduate schools have granted graduate-level credit for the Fellows' Program experience.
