Hertz Fellowship
What:
A fellowship that is renewable for up to five years of support for the graduate education of students of outstanding potential in the applied physical sciences. The Directors believe that the intent of the founders is most effectively accomplished by fostering the postgraduate studies of excellent young men and women who seem likely to become leaders in scientific and technological advances, exemplars of teaching skills in the applied physical sciences, and key contributors to the technological capability on which the well-being of the United States depends. It is the Foundation's hope that the stipend will allow Hertz Fellows to exercise intellectual independence early in their graduate careers, rather than having to accept immediate assignment to research tasks.
Who is eligible:
(1) Only applicants who will have received a bachelor's degree by the time they propose to commence tenure of their Fellowships, and propose to complete a program of graduate study leading to an advanced degree are eligible. Applications are accepted from students who have already commenced graduate study.
(2) The proposed field of graduate study must be concerned with applications of the physical sciences to problems (as opposed to work that extends the basic physical sciences). The foundation does not support students pursuing both Ph.D. and professional degrees: e.g. joint or parallel Ph.D./MD, Ph.D./LL.D., Ph.D./MBA programs.
(3) GPA must be at least 3.75/4.0 during the last two years of undergraduate work, although outstanding achievements in scientific or technological developments will be favorably noted in considering applications.
(4) U.S. citizenship, or documented evidence of application to acquire it, is required of all applicants.
Selection Procedure:
Applications are completed online. The Selection Committee of the Foundation's Directors awards fellowships on the basis of the application, academic transcript and reference reports submitted in support of the application, and in many cases the report of a personal, technical interview conducted with the applicant. All Fellowship applicants are notified by mail of the Foundation's action on their application on or before April 1 of each year.
Deadline: Completed Applications 10/29/2010 (PROJECTED)
Deadline: External 11/1/2010 (Reference forms due - faculty mails)
Who wins:
The Fellowship is highly competitive, with 20 qualified applicants annually receiving awards.
Finances:
The annual stipend is $31,000 for Option 1 (with full tuition equivalent and renewable for up to five years) and $36,000 for Option 2 (provides for two years of stipends and tuition equivalent then is reduced to $3,000 supplemental annual stipend for the following three years during which the Awardee must accept a Fellowship from another source).
