About the Scholarship Opportunities Program

Above are a few of our most successful students. On the left is Leah Donahue as Chancellor Cicerone informs her that she has won the Truman Scholarship. Scholarship Opportunities Program Director, Audrey DeVore, looks on excitedly as Chancellor Cicerone shares this excellent news with Leah. Leah is also a recipient of both the Dan and Jean Aldrich Scholarship and the Lauds & Laurels Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. In the middle photograph is Han Kang, a fellow Truman Scholar, with Chancellor Cicerone and Dean Meredith Lee. Han is also a Fulbright Fellow and has received several honors including: the Public Policy & International Affairs Fellowship, membership on the All USA Today First Team of Undergrads in the country, the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research, the Donald A Strauss Scholarship, and the Lauds & Laurels Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award. Finally, on the right with Chancellor Cicerone is Kirk Pak, another Fulbright Fellow, who was also a member of the All USA Today Third Team of Undergraduates in the country. Kirk’s other honors include being a Goldwater Scholar and recipient of a National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship.

The Scholarship Opportunities Program (SOP) assists undergraduate students at the University of California, Irvine, in applying for and winning prestigious scholarships. We obtain and organize information about significant external scholarships and convey this information via student outreach. We edit students’ Curriculum Vitae, provide feedback on application essays, and counsel students regarding application processes. We also facilitate the campus review process for all merit scholarships that require university endorsement, present workshops, assist students with Curriculum Vitae, provide guidance on statements of purpose and project proposals, and convene mock interviews.

Students who win the prestigious scholarships or fellowships described on this website have outstanding academic records, but they have more than that. Some scholarship programs look for distinctive activity outside the classroom, perhaps evidence of leadership in the campus or larger community. Often winners have established their credentials by engaging in and successfully completing a substantial intellectual or creative project. Strong, detailed faculty letters of recommendation are essential; to get this level of support, students must develop an academic relationship with faculty outside the classroom.

It takes time and effort to build the sort of college career that a successful application reflects. We urge students to prepare for these awards early by building relationships with faculty whose work interests you, pursuing research, community service, and leadership opportunities, and crafting the documentation of these interests – in the form of a Curriculum Vitae, personal statement, proposal for future study/research, and faculty letters of recommendation.

Prospective scholarship winners and faculty advisors can plan ahead for these prestigious competitions using the calendar on the Prestigious Scholarships page of our website.
